HCA, the nation's largest for-profit healthcare provider, paid $631 million to settle two cost report cases brought by Phillips & Cohen and a kickback case brought by another firm. The lawsuits brought by the firm's clients sparked the government's largest Medicare fraud investigation. Two years before that settlement, HCA had paid $840 million to settle criminal charges and other qui tam lawsuits. That agreement included $92 million to settle a whistleblower lawsuit brought by other Phillips & Cohen clients.
