The Wall Street Journal quotes Phillips & Cohen partner Sean McKessy about the challenges faced by professionals in compliance and internal audit roles when becoming whistleblowers.
The presumption of ineligibility and that compliance professionals might want to be loyal to the company and not report externally have made it relatively rare for compliance and internal audit professionals to receive an SEC award, according to Sean McKessy, a former chief of the SEC’s whistleblower program.
“There’s headwind for these people,” said Mr. McKessy, who represents whistleblowers as a partner at law firm Phillips & Cohen LLP. “And, knowing that, their headway to get paid is a narrower path as well.”
