NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, July 6, 2016 – Phillips & Cohen LLP, the largest and most successful law firm devoted to representing whistleblowers, has opened an office in New York City to provide Wall Street clients and other whistleblowers in the metropolitan area easier access to its services.
“We have long represented New York whistleblowers in the financial services industry, as well as whistleblowers who report fraud against the government,” said Erika A. Kelton, a partner at Phillips & Cohen. “Our New York office will enable us to better meet the increasing demand of whistleblowers for our services in one of the world’s leading financial centers.”
Phillips & Cohen has won three separate whistleblower awards for its clients from the Securities and Exchange Commission in the past two years, including a whistleblower reward of more than $32 million. That is the largest award the Securities and Exchange Commission has made under its whistleblower reward program. Phillips & Cohen has won more SEC whistleblower awards for its clients that any other law firm.
An earlier whistleblower case brought by Phillips & Cohen in the US Southern District of New York exposed the practice of “yield-burning” by Wall Street banks and led to 27 banks, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, paying the federal government more than $220 million to settle civil charges.
Phillips & Cohen also represented the whistleblowers whose “qui tam” case under the New York False Claims Act helped the state recover $20 million from a company that was allegedly defrauding school food programs. It was the largest recovery under the state law that didn’t involve healthcare.
“We look forward to continuing our strong working relationships with the US Attorneys in New York, the SEC and CFTC regional offices, as well as the New York Attorney General,” Kelton said. “New York is fortunate to have such strong leadership in federal and state enforcement. They all recognize the enormous value whistleblowers bring to their fraud enforcement efforts.”
Phillips & Cohen represents US and international whistleblowers under reward programs offered by the SEC, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the False Claims Act and similar state whistleblower laws.
The firm’s whistleblower cases have helped governments recover more than $12.3 billion – more than any other law firm. Its unmatched record of success has been recognized by the National Law Journal (“Plaintiffs’ Hot List”), Lawdragon (“500 Leading Lawyers in America”), Super Lawyers and other publications.
